Visual Sound is an outdoor performance theatre in Allerton Park in Monticello, IL. The concept of Visual Sound is to make
music/sound stand still, as if it was hovering in place. The concept is derived from the idea that sound has a physical dimension, density, vibrancy, rhythm, and texture. The form is created through an abstraction of sound waves in three dimensions: frequency, amplitude, and time. A sound is created by different frequencies and amplitudes; music is thus a string of sounds over time. The way that the plane was manipulated by the different sounds generate the form. The sustainability of the project is created through a low impact fabric membrane held by a frame made of local wood. The form and position on the site allows summer winds to travel over and through the structure . The form also allows rain water to shed into an existing stream which flows into the gray water system directly and by means of a small pond on the sides of the main façade
